Problems That Tend To Happen When You Have Crooked Teeth

Straight teeth are a blessing. These pearly whites in good shape and order can help you impress anyone around you. But this is not the only benefit that you are going to get from straight teeth. The straightness of teeth can help you take care of your oral and dental health in pretty good way. It means that you will be able to avoid a lot of oral health infections. Having that said, it would be worth mentioning how your oral health is going to take a hit if you have crooked teeth.

Tooth decay
It can be very difficult to clean every surface of your teeth. This is the reason that you are going to have to floss your teeth on daily basis. However, even the flossing might not help if you have crooked teeth. That is because of the fact that there are going to be certain areas where the floss would not reach if you have crooked teeth. The biggest disadvantage of this crookedness is that the bacterial buildup will not be cleaned on time. This bacterial buildup can lead to tooth decay and then cavities.

Gum disease
Gum disease happens for the very same reason that leads to the tooth decay, i.e. bacterial buildup or hardened plaque. A few signs you may be suffering from gum disease include:

  • Tender and swollen gums
  • Gum recession due to which the vulnerable part of the teeth shows up
  • Bleeding in the gums when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Frequent canker sores
  • Bad breath

Certain cases of cooked teeth can be quite detrimental to gum health. When your gums are not quite fitting around the teeth, they can develop pockets deep under the gum line. These pockets can become breeding ground for bacteria. And the bad news is that you cannot do much about these pockets. Only a dental visit can save you from the trouble. If these pockets are left untreated, they can lead to severe kind of gum infection, ultimately leading to the tooth loss.

TMD/TMJ
Crooked teeth usually do not fit lone each other. When you close your mouth and do the normal clenching, the crookedness is not going to allow you to have proper closure of your mouth. It can be dangerous for your jaw. The joints that connect lower jaw with upper skull require the teeth in upper and lower jaw to be properly settled on each other. The crookedness doesn’t allow that. As a result, the disorders start appearing in those joints or jaw hinges, leading to the temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ disorder.

This problem is not all about the bite. You will have pain in the jaw and this pain can radiate to the neck and head area. In certain cases, it can cause severe kind of headache. And this pain can become chornic in the end.

Dealing with the crooked teeth
You can choose to get your teeth straightened if you are worried due to problems they cause. There are several orthodontic treatments available in this regard. The top ones include braces and Invisalign. You can discuss every option in detail with your dentist.
